Nama: What has Macheso done to be on the list? Print

Wonder Guchu - Nama nominations are out and as usual questions arise. Literature is a fine spread, so is dance and theatre as well as visual arts. But as always music and television hog the limelight and it is here where people tend to raise questions.Outstanding musician or group - Alick Macheso, Suluman Chimbetu and Tongai Moyo -  is one such category. Macheso has not been doing well in the past year. He held shows but were they any different from any of his shows in the past two years? But above all, he has not recorded any album in the past two years yet he qualifies to be in the category that should, I believe, accommodate people who improved their act. Why isn't Josphat Somanje in this category? After all, he is the most improved artist considering that he 'rose from the dead'.Tongai Moyo, to some extent, belongs to the category but again his act has not been any better than it was over the years. In short, what's new about his act? Suluman has been the man. He has a new brilliant album, Reverse Deal, and has slowly weaned himself from his father's act. He proved that he could hold his own against big guns in the industry. It's not a joke for a musician to fill up a venue when performing as the main act the way Suluman does. I dare Sam Mtukudzi or John Chibadura's sons to do the same. They can't.It's not surprising that there was nothing in the television drama and soap categories for various reasons. And this fact should be an awakening call for both the ZBC and production houses to do something.Terence Mapurisana is my great friend but I feel he should not compete in the electronic media award not because he has been doing it for years but because he should now be teaching cadet reporters the trade. The Chronicle's Daisy Jeremani has been consistent and the award, in all fairness should be hers.
